About Course

Unit 5 of your Grade 9 Physics course is called “Simple Machines.” In this unit, you will learn what simple machines are, how they help us, and how to use them to solve real-life problems. You will also learn how to design a simple machine by yourself.

In Chapter 5.1, you will learn what simple machines are and what they are used for. A simple machine is a tool that helps us do work more easily. It reduces the effort needed to lift or move something.

Chapter 5.2 is about levers. A lever is a bar that moves around a point called the fulcrum. You will learn the three classes of levers and how they are used in tools like scissors, wheelbarrows, and brooms.

Chapter 5.3 teaches you about pulleys. A pulley is a wheel with a rope. It helps you lift things by changing the direction of the force. You will learn the difference between fixed pulleys and movable pulleys.

In Chapter 5.4, you will learn how to classify simple machines into six types: lever, pulley, inclined plane, screw, wedge, and wheel and axle. You will see examples of each type in daily life.

Chapter 5.5 explains how to calculate a machine’s mechanical advantage, velocity ratio, and efficiency. These tell us how well a machine works and how much effort it saves.

Finally, Chapter 5.6 is about designing a simple machine. You will learn how to plan and create your own machine to solve a problem. This chapter helps you think like an inventor. You will decide what the machine will do, choose the type of simple machine to use, and draw a basic design. It is a fun and creative way to apply what you have learned in this unit.
