Grade 9 Physics Unit 6 : Mechanical Oscillation & Sound Waves
About Course
Unit 6 of your Grade 9 Physics course is called “Mechanical Oscillation and Sound Waves.” In this unit, you will learn how things move back and forth (oscillation), and how sound travels through the air as a wave.
First, Chapter 6.1 teaches you the basic parts of a wave. You will learn new words like crest, trough, amplitude, wavelength, period, and frequency. These are parts that all waves have, like waves in water or a vibrating string.
In Chapter 6.2, you will learn about string, pendulum, and spring. These things can move up and down or back and forth in a regular way. This movement is called oscillation. You will learn how to measure the time it takes for one full swing—this time is called the period.
Chapter 6.3 explains that waves carry energy, not matter. This means that when a wave moves through something, like air or rope, the thing does not move from place to place. Only the energy moves forward.
In Chapter 6.4, you will study sound waves. Sound waves move through the air by making small changes in air pressure. These changes go into your ear and let you hear sounds like music, voices, or car horns.
Chapter 6.5 teaches about superposition, which means what happens when two waves meet. Sometimes they make a bigger wave (called constructive interference), and sometimes they cancel each other out (called destructive interference). This is why some places are loud and others are quiet.
In Chapter 6.6, you will learn the characteristics of sound. You will understand that pitch (how high or low a sound is) comes from frequency, and loudness comes from amplitude. You will also learn that different instruments sound different because of the shape of their sound wave.
