About Course

Unit 4 of your Grade 9 Biology course is called “Reproduction.” In this unit, you will learn how living things continue from one generation to the next, and why reproduction is essential for the survival of every species.

First, Chapter 4.1 introduces the big question: Why are there always new people, animals, and plants even though individuals die? You’ll see that reproduction is what keeps life going.

In Chapter 4.2, you’ll learn about asexual reproduction—how some living things like bacteria, fungi, and plants can make exact copies of themselves without needing a mate. Chapter 4.3 explores the different types of asexual reproduction, like fission (splitting), fragmentation (breaking into parts), budding, and special plant methods like runners and tubers. You’ll see real examples in nature and everyday life in Ethiopia.

Chapter 4.4 explains sexual reproduction in humans. You’ll find out how two parents, each giving a special cell (egg and sperm), create a new individual with a mix of traits. This chapter also helps you compare the advantages and disadvantages of asexual and sexual reproduction.

Chapters 4.5 to 4.7 describe what happens during puberty and the changes in boys and girls. Chapter 4.5 introduces the primary and secondary sexual characteristics. Chapter 4.6 focuses on the male reproductive structures and explains the function of organs like the testes, scrotum, and penis. Then, Chapter 4.7 discusses the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, uterus, and vagina. You will also read about the menstrual cycle and how the body prepares for possible pregnancy in Chapter 4.8.

Chapter 4.9 explains what happens during fertilization, pregnancy, and how twins form. You’ll learn about the different stages of pregnancy and how a baby grows inside the mother.

In Chapter 4.10, you’ll discover different methods of birth control—how people can prevent unwanted pregnancy and space the birth of their children. You’ll see how some methods also help protect against diseases.

Finally, Chapter 4.11 teaches about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), how they are spread, and ways to protect yourself and your community.

By the end of Unit 4, you’ll be able to explain the importance of reproduction, describe different ways living things reproduce, understand human reproductive systems, and know how to keep yourself healthy during puberty and beyond.

To help you reach these goals, the course gives you simple notes, solved examples, activities you can try at home, and questions that are like those in the Ethiopian National Exam. Use these step by step, and you’ll be ready for your classroom tests and for the future.
