About Course

Amharic 102 – Basic Communication

  • Learning Objectives: Students will be able to form simple, grammatically correct sentences, use present tense verbs for daily actions, and ask/answer basic questions about family and routines.

  • Module Breakdown:

    1. Sentence Structure:

      • The Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order.

      • Example: $እኔ ቡና እጠጣለሁ$ (Əne bunna eṭeṭalehu - I coffee drink).

      • Activity: Sentence-building exercises where students arrange jumbled words correctly.

    2. Present Tense Verbs:

      • Introduction to verb roots.

      • Conjugating common verbs like $መሄድ$ (mähed - to go), $መምጣት$ (mämṭat - to come), $መብላት$ (mäblat - to eat).

      • Activity: Fill-in-the-blank conjugation quizzes.

    3. Asking Questions:

      • Question words: $ማን$ (man - who), (mən – what), $የት$ (yät - where), (mäče – when).

      • Forming simple questions and answers.

      • Activity: A short, guided dialogue script for students to practice with a partner or record.

    4. Vocabulary Expansion:

      • Family members: $እናት$ (ənat - mother), (abat – father), etc.

      • Daily routine actions: $መተኛት$ (mäteñat - to sleep), (mäsrat – to work).

      • Cultural Focus: Discussing the importance of family in Ethiopian culture.
