Amharic 104 – Cultural Contexts

  • Learning Objectives: Students will gain a deeper understanding of Ethiopian culture, be able to express their personal preferences, and use common proverbs in simple contexts.

  • Module Breakdown:

    1. Holidays & Traditions:

      • Deep dive into major holidays: $ገና$ (Gänna - Christmas), (T’əm-qät – Epiphany), ` (Fasika – Easter).

      • Vocabulary associated with celebrations.

      • Cultural Focus: Video content showing real holiday celebrations in Ethiopia.

    2. Expressing Likes & Dislikes:

      • Verbs $መውደድ$ (mäwdäd - to like/love) and $መጥላት$ (mäṭlat - to hate).

      • Expressing preferences: ` (kä…yələq…əwädalehu – I like … more than …).

      • Activity: A forum post where students write about food or music they like and dislike.

    3. Adjectives in Depth:

      • Adjective agreement and placement.

      • Comparative and superlative forms (e.g., big, bigger, biggest).

      • Activity: Descriptive writing practice.

    4. Common Proverbs:

      • Introduction to 3-5 simple, widely used proverbs.

      • Ex: `$ critiques addis ababa$ (Dägmo dägmo, əqul yəhonall – A little and a little becomes a full container).
