Grade 9 Biology Unit 2: Characteristics and Classification of Organisms
About Course
Unit 2 of your Grade 9 Biology course is called “Characteristics and Classification of Organisms.” In this unit, you will learn what makes something “alive,” and discover how scientists classify and organize the huge variety of living things found in Ethiopia and around the world.
First, Chapter 2.1 explains the characteristics shared by all living things, such as the need for energy, the ability to grow and reproduce, and the ways living things respond to their environment. You’ll see how these features help you tell living from non-living things.
In Chapter 2.2, you’ll explore taxonomy—the science of naming and classifying living things. Chapter 2.2.1 introduces the principles used to classify organisms, while 2.2.2 explains the different levels of classification, from kingdom down to species, using real examples.
Chapter 2.3 shows why classification is important, helping scientists identify useful and harmful organisms, find new medicines, and understand the relationships between living things.
In Chapter 2.4, you will learn about the Linnaean system of naming species using two Latin names. This helps people all over the world talk about the same plant or animal without confusion.
Chapter 2.5 introduces you to common Ethiopian plants and animals, teaching you both their local and scientific names.
In Chapter 2.6, you’ll study the five-kingdom system of classification: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. Each sub-section (2.6.1–2.6.5) describes the key features and examples of each kingdom, including which organisms belong where and what makes them unique.
Finally, Chapter 2.7 celebrates some of Ethiopia’s renowned taxonomists—scientists who have contributed to identifying, naming, and classifying the country’s incredible biodiversity.
By the end of Unit 2, you will be able to explain what makes something living, classify living things into kingdoms and smaller groups, use scientific names correctly, and appreciate the work of Ethiopian scientists who study plants and animals.
To help you succeed, this unit provides clear notes, helpful tables, examples from Ethiopian nature, practice questions, and activities to build your skills for national exams and real-world observation.
