About Course

This unit 1, “Geological History and Topography of Ethiopia,” is the starting point for Grade 9 Geography. It introduces the fundamental concepts of geography as a science and then uses these tools to explore Ethiopia’s location, shape, geological formation, and major landforms.

Chapter 1.1 – Geography: Meaning, scope and branch

This chapter introduces the basics of geography as a field of study.

  • Define geography as the study of the Earth’s surface, its features, its inhabitants, and the interactions between them.
  • Explore the scope of geography (what it covers) and its two main branches:
    • Physical Geography (the study of the natural environment)
    • Human Geography (the study of people and their communities)

Chapter 1.2 – Location, size, and shape of Ethiopia

This section covers Ethiopia’s specific “address” and physical dimensions on the globe.

  • Describe Ethiopia’s absolute location using specific lines of latitude and longitude.
  • Explain its relative location in relation to its neighbors and major physical and cultural features of the world (e.g., in the Horn of Africa).
  • Analyze the effects of Ethiopia’s size and shape on its political, economic, and sociocultural conditions.

Chapter 1.3 – Geological History of Ethiopia

This chapter dives into the deep past to understand how Ethiopia’s landscape was formed.

  • Explain the major geologic processes and eras that shaped the land surface of Ethiopia, including the uplift of the Arabian-Nubian Shield.
  • Describe the formation of the Great Rift Valley as a result of tectonic plate movement.
  • Identify the major landforms of Ethiopia (e.g., Highlands, Lowlands) that resulted from this long geological history.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the concept, scope, and branches of geography.
  • Describe the absolute and relative location of Ethiopia.
  • Analyze the effects of the shape and size of Ethiopia on its sociocultural, political, and economic conditions.
  • Explain the geologic processes that shaped the land surface of Ethiopia.
  • Describe the different landforms of Ethiopia.
