This unit 3 explores the diverse history of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, often called the “cradle of humankind.” You’ll learn about the region’s rich tapestry of languages, religions, and settlements, and trace the rise and fall of powerful ancient states like Aksum, Zagwe, and the Sultanate of Shewa up until the late 13th century.


Chapter 3.1 – Languages, Religions and Peoples of Ethiopia and the Horn

This chapter introduces the fundamental cultural pillars of the region.

  • Language Families: Classify the main language super-families found in Ethiopia.
  • Major Religions: List and describe the major religious traditions that have shaped Ethiopian society.
  • Settlement Patterns: Examine how different peoples settled across the diverse landscapes of Ethiopia.

Chapter 3.2 – Pre-Aksumite States and their Geographical Setting

Travel back in time to the earliest known states in the region.

  • Identify the states that existed before the rise of Aksum.
  • Analyze the geographical settings that allowed these early civilizations to flourish.

Chapter 3.4 – Aksumite Kingdom

Chapter 3.5 – Zagwe Dynasty

Learn about the dynasty that succeeded Aksum and left a lasting architectural legacy.

  • Evaluate the rise and fall of the Zagwe Dynasty, which ruled from the 12th to the 13th century, replacing the Aksumite dynasty in 1270 AD.

Chapter 3.6 – The Sultanate of Shewa
