Everything you need to know about Atenu.org — Ethiopia’s leading e-learning platform for high school students

About Atenu

What is Atenu?

Atenu is Ethiopia’s leading online learning platform for high school students (Grades 9–12). Founded by the Atenu Foundation, a Canadian-Ethiopian non-profit, we provide 500+ courses, interactive practice exams, science and math simulators, Anki flashcards, scholarship resources, and community support. Our mission is to empower Ethiopian students to excel in national exams (ESSLCE), international tests, and university preparation — while building future-ready skills in STEM and digital literacy.

Who can use Atenu?

Atenu is designed primarily for Ethiopian high school students from Grade 9 to Grade 12. However, parents, teachers, and anyone preparing for national or international exams — including TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, and JLPT — can also benefit. We have users in Ethiopia, Canada, the USA, Japan, and many other countries.

What subjects and courses are available?

Atenu offers over 500 courses covering mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, English, history, economics, geography, and more. We also provide QuickNotes summaries with downloadable Anki flashcards, interactive H5P quizzes, science and math simulators, and dedicated prep courses for TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, JLPT, TCF Canada, and TEC Canada. Browse all courses at atenu.org/courses.

Is Atenu free to use?

The vast majority of Atenu’s resources — including courses, QuickNotes, Anki flashcards, past exams, simulators, and the scholarship database — are completely free. Some specialized premium courses or features (like full Model Exam analysis at 1000 ብር) may require a small payment. Our mission is to keep education accessible for every Ethiopian student.

Features & Study Tools

What are QuickNotes and Anki flashcards?

QuickNotes are concise unit-by-unit summaries for every subject, designed for fast revision. Each QuickNotes unit includes a downloadable Anki flashcard deck that uses spaced repetition — a science-backed technique that shows you information just before you forget it. This combination helps you study smarter and retain more for the ESSLCE and other exams. Anki works offline, which is perfect for students in low-connectivity areas.

What are Atenu Model Exams?

Atenu Model Exams are timed, auto-graded practice exams that simulate the real ESSLCE experience. They’re available every weekend (Saturday–Sunday) starting at 9:00 AM EAT, are free to take, and give you an instant score. For 1000 ብር, you can get a full analysis with ranking, unit-by-unit breakdown, and a personalized improvement plan. Visit the ESSLCE Hub to learn more, or go directly to the Exam Portal.

What are simulators on Atenu?

Simulators are interactive tools that let you practice science experiments, math problems, and other real-world skills in a safe digital environment. They help you build confidence, visualize concepts, and apply what you learn — without needing a physical lab.

How can I prepare for international exams on Atenu?

Atenu provides dedicated courses, sample tests, and practice questions for TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), TCF Canada, and TEC Canada. Visit our courses page and filter by the exam you want to prepare for. We also have study-abroad guides for Canada with scholarship and visa information.

Scholarships

How can I find scholarships?

Visit the Atenu Scholarship Database for a curated, regularly updated list of local and international scholarships for Ethiopian students. We also have a detailed Scholarships Guide with application tips, destination guides, and success stories. You can filter by country, deadline, and field of study.

What is the Atenu Foundation Scholarship?

The Atenu Foundation Scholarship awards 10,000 ETB each to two top-performing Ethiopian Grade 12 students (one Natural Sciences, one Social Sciences) who excel in the National Examination and are admitted to a public university in Ethiopia. Applicants must be active Atenu.org users. Applications are open October 1–31 each year.
