Amharic 103 – Everyday Use

• Learning Objectives: Students will be able to navigate common real-world scenarios like shopping and asking for directions, describe simple objects, and use both present and past tenses.

• Module Breakdown:

  1. Market & Shopping Vocabulary:

     • Names of common foods, fruits, and vegetables.

     • Phrases: $ስንት ነው?$ (Səntə näw? - How much is it?), $ይሄን እፈልጋለሁ$ (Yəhen əfäləgalehu - I want this).

     • Activity: Video-based roleplay in a virtual market.

  2. Transportation & Directions:

     • Terms: $ታክሲ$ (taksi), $ባስ$ (bas), $ቀጥታ$ (qäṭəta – straight), $ቀኝ$ (qäñ - right), $ግራ$ (gəra – left).

     • Activity: Interactive map exercise where students give or follow directions.

  3. Introduction to Past Tense:

     • Conjugating verbs in the simple past tense.

     • Contrasting present and past actions. Ex: $እሄዳለሁ$ (əhedalehu - I go) vs. $ሄድኩ$ (hedku – I went).

     • Activity: Quizzes where students convert sentences from present to past tense.

  4. Describing Objects:

     • Using basic adjectives with nouns.
