Amharic 105 – Intermediate Grammar

• Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to narrate events across different timeframes (past, present, future), express ownership, and connect ideas using essential conjunctions to form compound sentences.

• Module Breakdown:

  1. Mastering the Future Tense:

     • Formation and use of the simple future (often identical to present tense, distinguished by context).

     • Introducing the more explicit future with the infinitive + $ነው$ (näw). Ex: `$ልበላነው$ (ləbäla näw – I am about to eat).

     • Expressing intention and obligation with verbs like $መፈለግ$ (mäfäläg - to want) and `$መቻል$ (mäčal – to be able).

  2. Possessives and Plurals:

     • Attaching possessive suffixes to nouns: $ቤቴ$ (bete - my house), $መኪናህ$ (mäkinah – your car, m.), `$ጓደኛዋ$ (gwadeñawa – her friend).

     • Forming noun plurals with the $–ዎች$ (-očč) suffix: $ሰዎች$ (säw-očč – people), `$መጽሐፎች$ (mäṣəhaf-očč – books).

     • Activity: Interactive drill where students match pronouns to the correct possessive suffix. A quiz on making nouns plural and possessive.

  3. Essential Connectors & Conjunctions:

     • Building complex sentences with $እና$ (ənna - and), $ግን$ (gən – but), `$ወይም$ (wäyəm – or).

     • Showing cause and effect with $ስለ$ (səlä - because of/about) and `$ስለዚህ$ (səläzih – therefore).

     • Activity: Sentence-combining exercises. Provide two simple sentences and have the student combine them with the correct conjunction.

  4. Introduction to Storytelling:

     • Combining tense, possessives, and conjunctions to narrate a simple personal story.

     • Practice with story sequencing words: $በመጀመሪያ$ (bämäjämärıya - first), $ከዚያ$ (käzzīya – then), `$በመጨረሻ$ (bämäčäräša – finally).

     • Activity: Students write and record a 1-minute audio story about their previous day.
