Amharic 105 – Intermediate Grammar

Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to narrate events across different timeframes (past, present, future), express ownership, and connect ideas using essential conjunctions to form compound sentences.

Mastering the Future Tense:

Formation and use of the simple future (often identical to present tense, distinguished by context).

Introducing the more explicit future with the infinitive +
$ነው$ (näw). Ex: ` (ləbäla näw – I am about to eat). -
Expressing intention and obligation with verbs like
$መፈለግ$ (mäfäläg - to want)and ` (mäčal – to be able).

Possessives and Plurals:

Attaching possessive suffixes to nouns:
$ቤቴ$ (bete - my house),(mäkinah – your car, m.), ` (gwadeñawa – her friend). -
Forming noun plurals with the
$–ዎች$ (-očč) suffix:(säw-očč – people), ` (mäṣəhaf-očč – books). -
Activity: Interactive drill where students match pronouns to the correct possessive suffix. A quiz on making nouns plural and possessive.
